About Me

Alex Barnes, Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney

I’m Alex, a Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys with over 14 years’ experience in the patent profession.  With a blend of experience including roles at a top-tier private practice firm and a highly-regarded in-house IP department of a FTSE 100 telecommunications company, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the patent system and, more importantly, how it can be leveraged by businesses.

As a specialist in Cyber, Intelligent (AI/ML) & Autonomous technologies, I work with patents relating to computer hardware and software, networking, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), robotics and

My Firm

In 2025, I established my own firm, Alexander Barnes IP Limited, bringing my expertise to innovative businesses, particularly start-ups and SMEs, in the Cotswolds, including the technology hubs of Oxford and Cheltenham, and beyond.

Operating through my own firm allows me to provide a genuinely flexible and personal service, enabling me to gain a deep understanding of both my clients’ technologies and their broader commercial context, ensuring that the advice I provide is always aligned with their overarching business objectives.

My Background

Before establishing my firm, I spent more than six years working as an in-house patent attorney at BT, bearing primary responsibility for providing dedicated patent support for a number of their research groups, including their Future Cyber Defence research group.  During my time at BT, I was primarily concerned with inventions relating to computer and network security, data analytics, fraud prevention, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), blockchain, digital twins, Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and drones.

Prior to that, during my time in private practice, I advised technology companies of all sizes on protecting their inventions and managing patent portfolios in fields such as digital rights management, white-box cryptography, content watermarking, computer and network security, satellite navigation, search technologies, computer games, solid state storage, cloud computing, computer processors and mobile communications.

Before entering the patent profession, I worked in several technical and engineering roles in software development, cybersecurity and electromechanical control systems at various high-profile institutions operating in the finance and defence sectors - including as a Cyber Scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton Down and as a Technical Analyst (Software Developer) at Morgan Stanley.

I hold a first-class Master’s degree (MEng) in Electronic Engineering with Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Warwick, where I studied topics such as digital electronics, computer systems, high-integrity systems, intelligent systems, automation, robotics, and biomedical engineering.  My main project resulted in the production of a search & rescue robot that competed in an international competition (as well as an appearance on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show).  As a result of my interest in the subject, I voluntarily studied additional modules above and beyond my degree requirements, making me also eligible for the degree title “Electronic Engineering with Robotics”.

My interest in computing began early, sparked by my fascination with chess, itself ignited by experimenting with the program Battle Chess on my family’s first computer – an i386 that ran MS-DOS and required programs to be loaded from 5.25” floppy disks.  That early curiosity grew into competitive success, leading to winning national and regional titles and selection for the national junior team.  However, it was the arrival of IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer, which famously defeated the world champion Garry Kasparov, that piqued my interest in intelligent systems driving me to learn to program and explore computer systems in depth.  A later visit to Bletchley Park expanded that interest to include cybersecurity.

Today, that same underlying curiosity continues to motivate me, and I thoroughly enjoy working with innovations at the forefront of Cyber, Intelligent (AI/ML) and Autonomous Technology.
